The Mariners' Museum showcases a collection of maritime artifacts including ship models, figureheads, working steam engines, scrimshaw, art and more. Nauticus, The National Maritime Center is a fun and exciting interactive maritime science center featuring more that 150 exhibits as well as exotic aquaria, touch pools and shark petting. Bacon's Castle, built in 1665, is shaped like a Greek Cross, with two groups of diagonally set triple chimneys and curvilinear Jacobean gables. Careful excavating in 1983 showed the previous existence of three separate gardens - one for each century of the plantation's history. The Garden Club of Virginia has made great strides in restoring these gardens which are available in accordance with touring the plantation home. Closed Monday in season. Colonial Williamsburg was Virginia's capital from 1699 to 1780. Williamsburg was the social, cultural and political hub of Great Britain's largest North American colony. Yorktown Victory Center is where Colonial America ended. Outdoor history interpretations, hundreds of original artifacts and a 20 minute film paint a vivid picture of the end of the Revolutionary War. Yorktown National Battlefields is administered by the National Park Service. At the visitor center you can view a 16 minute film, "Siege of Yorktown", survey a battlefield from the rooftop overlook, tour the battlefield and town with a Park Ranger or tour the museum housing battle related artifacts such as General George Washington's battlefield tent.
