Ham-o-ween in Genuine Smithfield

Friday, October 31
Trick or Treating at participating business begins at 5:30 p.m.
Costume contest at Smithfield Times Gazebo begins at 6:30 p.m.
Carved Pumpkin Contest: drop off your pumpkins between 4:00 and 5:30 p.m. Judging will take place after 5:30 p.m.

Cookies and lemonade will be served.

Ghosts, princesses and super heroes may get scared — but they will be safe this Halloween at Smithfield’s own Safe Trick or Treat. The annual event, one of the town’s most popular, will be held in downtown Smithfield. Businesses will provide treats to children, followed by a costume & jack-o-lantern contest.

Businesses will provide treats to children, followed by costume judging at the gazebo stage in front of The Smithfield Times. There are numerous age categories for children and adults. Prizes for costume and pumpkin winners are provided by local merchants. Grace Street residents also join in the fun and many houses are elaborately decorated for the evening.
Safe Trick or Treat is co-sponsored by The Smithfield Times, the Smithfield Police Department and participating Smithfield Historic District Businesses.
A town ordinance restricts trick-or-treating to children age 12 and under.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Community Breakfast

Saturday, November 8 & 22 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at VFW Post 8545, 223 Washington Street, Smithfield

The Smithfield VFW invites the community to a fund raising breakfast featuring "Salted Fried Herring Fish," scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, sausage gravy, biscuits grits, mixed fruits, coffee, juice, cornbread and omelets. Breakfast is held every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. The VFW building is located across from the Smithfield Library. Donation $8. All proceeds go to support Local Veterans and community projects.

Firehouse Bluegrass Benefit Concert
Friday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m., Fire Station 10, 15020 Carrollton Blvd.

Proceeds benefit the all-volunteer fire/rescue service of Carrollton and nearby mutual aid districts in Smithfield and northern Suffolk. $5 admission. Your donations to this non-profit all-volunteer department serve the community by enabling the purchase of needed medical, rescue and fire fighting supplies and equipment. Hot dogs and soft drinks are available during the concert. Please bring your own chair.

Smithfield Little Theatre presents the Gentlemen of the College
Sunday, December 14, performances at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. at the Smithfield Little Theatre, 210 N. Church Street in downtown Smithfield
A true holiday treat, the Gentlemen of the College is the men's a capella singing group from the College of William and Mary. They will be joined by Smithfield's own "Hamtown Harmony Chorus" - a prospective Sweet Adelines Chapter for a program of seasonal and popular music. Net proceeds will benefit the Food Bank of Isle of Wight County through the Christian Outreach Program. Tickets are $10 for Adults and $5 for students (all general admission). Fort Boykin has been a part of American history since 1623 when a fort known as the Castle was constructed to protect the Jamestown colonists from Native Americans and raiding Spaniards. Today, Fort Boykin remains essentially intact and constitutes a well-preserved example of military architecture of the Civil War era. Sunday, January 11 at 4:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 201 Cedar Street in downtown Smithfield
Solo Youth Recitalist Sterling Elliott, a 15 years old cellist from Newport News, and straight-A student at Menchville High School will perform a full recital at Trinity United Methodist Church. Sterling is the student of Virginia Symphony cellist, Mike Daniels, and the winner of numerous competitions and awards including an opportunity to study at the Perlman Music Festival in New York this past summer. A Free-Will Offering will be taken.

Mardi Gras Run4Beads
Saturday, February 7 from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
The race course begins in Downtown Smithfield at Joyner's Field, behind the Arts Center at 319 Main St., and continues through Windsor Castle Park, returning to Downtown Smithfield at The Smithfield Times.

The only Mardi Gras Run & Festival in Coastal Virginia! Dress up in your favorite Mardi Gras costume and run in the Geaux for the Gold 10K, Fat Tuesday 5K or the Crawfish Crawl 1K! Runners (or walkers) of all levels are welcome. The Crawfish Crawl is designed for groups with young children. Each participant is timed individually. After the run, enjoy delicious refreshments and great jazz music at the Mardi Gras Festival downtown. The festival is open to the public. Browse our exhibitors and shop our downtown merchants for one-of-a-kind items you won't find at any mall!

Sunday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m. (please note time change!) at Christ Episcopal Church, 111 S. Church Street in downtown Smithfield
Ryan Clemens, a distant relative of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) will present his one-man show impersonating the venerated American author and humorist. Ryan, a Virginia Stage Company resident artist, has worked in theaters throughout the country providing classes and workshops. He will be accompanied by Reg Lanning, a banjo player with riverboat experience, who will provide a special pre-concert at 3:30 pm and an interlude during the performance.
