Walking Tour of Historic Fort Huger - Sesquicentennial Event

Fort Boykin has been a part of American history since 1623 when a fort known as the Castle was constructed to protect the Jamestown colonists from Native Americans and raiding Spaniards. Today, Fort Boykin remains essentially intact and constitutes a well-preserved example of military architecture of the Civil War era. 6th Ever, Re-Inaugural Pagan River Raft Race
Saturday June 30 at 3:00 p.m. at Smithfield Station
This year's theme is "Op Sail - Smithfield 2012." The Race course will be from the Smithfield Station Light House north to a buoy which must be circled then south to the finish line at the Cypress Creek Bridge.
There are two categories of rafts permitted: MODIFIED – any existing floating hull modified so that the original hull is not readily apparent or visible, powered by hand/paddle or humanly powered and HUCK FINN – any homemade floating vessel powered by hand/paddle or humanly powered. Join the fun!!!

Civil War Lecture Series: The U.S.S. Monitor - Sesquicentennial Event

The U.S.S. Monitor was the first ironclad warship commissioned by the United States Navy during the Civil War. Her participation in the Battle of Hampton Roads with C.S.S. Virginia marked a new age of naval warfare. Historian Anna Holloway discusses this ship and her legacy. Free.

Civil War Sesquicentennial Legacy Event

The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission and the Library of Virginia are working together to locate original manuscript material related to the Civil War. The material will be used for reference on both the Library of Virginia and Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission websites. On the 27th, Civil War 150 Legacy Project staff will visit the Isle of Wight County Museum to scan privately-held war-related documents. Appointments are encouraged.
