Smithfield Music brings back a crowd favorite, MSG Acoustic Blues Trio, for an intimate house concert. Their style of Piedmont Blues has delighted the locals every time they have played.

Civil War Lecture Series: The Forts of Isle of Wight County - Sesquicentennial Event

Monday, March 19 at 7:00 pm., at the Isle of Wight County Museum, 103 Main Street, downtown Smithfield

Fort Monroe was Union-held during the Civil War, and this stronghold posed problems for the Confederate capital. The Confederacy constructed a series of forts along the James River to help protect Richmond. Local historian Albert Burckard discusses the construction and viability of Forts Huger and Boykin. Park Day at Fort Boykin Historic Park

Sponsored by the Civil War Preservation Trust. Park Day is an annual hands-on preservation event created by Civil War Preservation Trust to assist local groups with the maintenance of Civil War sites. With 48,000 members, CWPT is the largest non-profit battlefield preservation organization in the United States whose goal is to preserve our nation’s endangered Civil War sites and to promote appreciation of these hallowed grounds through education and heritage tourism. In exchange for their hard work, volunteers receive t-shirts and have an opportunity to hear a local historian describe the significance of the site.

Civil War Lecture Series: The Peninsula Campaign - Sesquicentennial Event

The Peninsula Campaign of the American Civil War was a major Union operation launched in southeastern Virginia in 1862. Its effects on both sides of the James River, as well as the war itself, were far-reaching. Historian J. Michael Moore discusses this first large-scale offensive in the Eastern Theater. Free.

Drums Alive!: Civil War Drummers - Sesquicentennial Event

Saturday, September 15 from 2:00 until 4:00 pm., at the Isle of Wight County Museum, 103 Main Street, downtown Smithfield

Through crafts and hands-on activities, participants will learn of the importance of drummers during the Civil War. An integral part of the unit, the drummer established communications, kept order among the units and beat cadence for troops on the move. $10 per child. Registration required. Fort Boykin has been a part of American history since 1623 when a fort known as the Castle was constructed to protect the Jamestown colonists from Native Americans and raiding Spaniards. Today, Fort Boykin remains essentially intact and constitutes a well-preserved example of military architecture of the Civil War era. Civil War Lecture Series: The U.S.S. Monitor - Sesquicentennial Event

The U.S.S. Monitor was the first ironclad warship commissioned by the United States Navy during the Civil War. Her participation in the Battle of Hampton Roads with C.S.S. Virginia marked a new age of naval warfare. Historian Anna Holloway discusses this ship and her legacy. Free.
