"Open Mic" Contest for Smithfield Music's Aiken Fest at Jalapeno's Restaurant
Thursday, September 2, 8:00 pm. until midnight

Are you a burgeoning singer/songwriter in the Tidewater area who would like a chance to perform at the festival? Aiken Fest has partnered with a few select venues that will hold “Open Mic” Nights to select a winner who will perform a 15 minute set of their original music on Saturday, October 1 at the festival. The judges will be looking for original Americana Roots songs. One winner will be chosen from each venue. (Contest rules available at AikenAndFriendsFest. Com.)

Nike-Ajax Missile Site N-75 Walking Tour
Saturday, September 11 at 2:00 p.m.

The Nike Site is one of the Cold War's few surviving Army air-Defense Posts. Local historian Albert Burckard hosts a short presentation and a walking tour of this site which contains the original barracks, mess hall, administration and recreation building, officer/non-commissioned officer family housing, fueling area and underground missile magazines. Also visible are the fueling area and concrete slabs that mark the location of the underground missile magazines.
The event is free and open to the public.

Free Walking Tour of Historic Fort Huger
Saturday, September 11 at 10:00 a.m.

Visitors to Fort Huger are invited for a free walking tour of the site to learn the significance of this gateway to the Confederate capital. Led by local historian Albert Burckard, this tour will last approximately one hour. Reservations are not required. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

Day of Remembrance
Sunday, September 12 at 5:00 p.m.

The Isle of Wight Citizen's Association will again sponsor the annual "Day of Remembrance" ceremony on to commemorate Isle of Wight County's emergency first responders, sheriff's department and police officers.The public ceremony will take place in the memorial garden at the south foot of the James River Bridge on the site of the former toll plaza building.

The date selected each year is always the closest Sunday to September 11th when, in 2001, 343 firefighters died while attempting to rescue the victims of the Islamic terror attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. All Fire and EMS departments, the Isle of Wight Sheriff's Department and police officers of Smithfield and Windsor are invited to participate and be recognized. The public is also encouraged to attend.

The Annual Blessing of the Animals is held to honor the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals. 9th Annual Smithfield Hog Jog

5K Run/Walk, NEW Wild Hog and Kids Fun Run

Saturday, October 9

Race Day Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. (closes at 8:45) on the waterfront at Smithfield Foods Headquarters in downtown Smithfield. The 5K Run/Walk will being at 9:00 a.m. and the Kids Fun Run (for ages 10 and under) will begin at 10:00. The awards and post-race Party, featuring Gwaltney hot dogs, soda and beer will begin at 10:30. New this year is the Wild Hog- a "mystery course" through Windsor Castle Park.

Registration: $20 ($25 after September 30). Only pre-registered runners are guaranteed a t-shirt!

Awards and doorprizes will be given out to entrants and volunteers. All children will receive a participation award. The best dressed "Piggy" in both the 5K and Kids Fun Run will also receive a special award.

Finish line results and race support provided by the Peninsula Track Club. Race proceeds will benefit the Isle of Wight County Christian Outreach Program (COP), a local nonprofit organization that helps those in need in the county.

Free Walking Tour of Historic Fort Huger

Visitors to Fort Huger are invited for a free walking tour of the site to learn the significance of this gateway to the Confederate capital. Led by local historian Albert Burckard, this tour will last approximately one hour. Reservations are not required. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

Nike-Ajax Missile Site N-75 Walking Tour
Saturday, October 16 at 2:00 p.m.

The Nike Site is one of the Cold War's few surviving Army air-Defense Posts. Local historian Albert Burckard hosts a short presentation and a walking tour of this site which contains the original barracks, mess hall, administration and recreation building, officer/non-commissioned officer family housing, fueling area and underground missile magazines. Also visible are the fueling area and concrete slabs that mark the location of the underground missile magazines.
The event is free and open to the public.
